Denver Public School employees will begin receiving detailed information about their pay on redesigned pay stubs beginning in August 2002. Several improvements have been made to make pay and deduction information more secure and easier to understand.

First, pay information will be printed on a pressure seal Z-fold envelope. This Z-fold design will protect confidential pay information in transit. Social security and bank account numbers have been removed from the pay stub to further enhance security. The new form provides a text message box to relay information to employees previously conveyed through "stuffers". Barton Beckley in Disbursing will be the contact for text messaging requests.

Second, the pay stub has been reorganized into categories to highlight important differences. Before tax deductions will be shown in a different section from after tax deductions so the difference in tax treatment is clear. Maximizing your before tax deductions can significantly increase your retirement savings. A formula line (Gross Pay less Deductions, and amounts included in the Gross Pay that are not paid to you on this payroll such as Group Life Premium, Mileage Reimbursement and TTD) will show the method used to calculate your take home pay.

Third, descriptions of pay types and deductions have been enhanced to assist employees in more easily identifying the source of the amounts shown.

Elements in the redesigned stub include:

  1. Your Name
  2. Pay Date
  3. Check number or advice number (electronic pay)
  4. Earnings subject to tax
  5. Sum of all earnings in box 8
  6. This space is blank but in the future will show total deductions taken and reimbursements reported and paid separately
  7. Your take home pay
  8. This space shows, by type, earnings and reimbursements being reported and the current calculation. It also shows the amount reported for each category since the beginning of the calendar year.
  9. This space shows deductions from your earnings and reimbursements that would reduce the total before taxes are calculated.
  10. This space shows deductions taken from your earnings and reimbursements after taxes are calculated and deducted.
  11. Direct deposit of the amount paid is identified here.
  12. Federal, state, social security, medicare and local taxes appear here.
  13. Leave balances appear here for leave reported.
  14. Look in this space for important messages.
